Canadian scientists warn of hundreds of Quebec fish deaths for unknown reasons

Several Canadian scientists have warned of the death of hundreds of fish in Quebec, specifically in a section of the St. Lawrence River near Montreal.

For its part, a local organization in Montreal, called La Vigile Verte, confirmed that water levels had suddenly disappeared to the lowest they had been seen in decades between Montreal and Brossard.

The organization explained that the drop in water levels in the Prairie Bassin has left a large number of marine animals high and dry.

It is worth noting that the director of the local organization, Gina Fili, said that she discovered that she was stepping on hundreds of dead fish while she was walking on the shores of the St. Lawrence to clean up garbage.

She stated that the scene was terrible, as there were large and small fish, and all different types of fish died, adding that this is not normal.

Philly added that she was standing on the river shore in Leon Gravel Park, stressing that the water on the river shore was very low.

She said that she was able to walk a few hundred meters to an island inside the river, unlike the normal one, which usually requires swimming to it and not walking, since there is no water at all.

For his part, the biologist and founder of the organization, Dr. Philip Bliss, described this situation as completely unnatural.

Dr. Philip added that he believes the death of these fish was a result of a lack of oxygen and waste, stressing that the temperature a few weeks ago was approaching 10 degrees below zero.

It is worth noting that the Canadian Maritime Highways Authority confirmed in a previous statement that it controls the water levels during the winter non-navigation period for the purposes of infrastructure maintenance.
