Rain in UAE: Insurance Claims May Face Rejection in Certain Cases

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

The Emirates experienced a substantial downpour on Tuesday, resulting in extensive flooding of roads, parking areas, and wadis.

This deluge has raised concerns regarding insurance coverage for motorists in the UAE, as claims for rain-related damages may encounter obstacles.

According to industry insiders, insurance claims may face rejection for various reasons. Damaged vehicle wipers and driving or parking in submerged areas are among the factors that could lead to a claim denial. Moinur Rehman, an executive director at Unitrust Insurance Broker, highlighted the conditions under which motorists can file claims. If a vehicle parked in a flooded parking lot necessitates maintenance, the insurance typically covers these costs. However, attempting to start an engine in waterlogged or partially submerged areas may result in rejected claims.

The recent heavy rainfall prompted a nationwide red alert, leading authorities to extend remote work and distance learning. Furthermore, intentionally driving on flooded roads during rain could nullify insurance coverage.

Rehman advised motorists to review insurance terms carefully, ensuring coverage for floods and other natural calamities. Exclusions in insurance policies may leave individuals vulnerable to unexpected expenses.

It's crucial to note that these considerations primarily apply to comprehensive insurance plans rather than third-party motor insurance. The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai urged residents to utilize public transportation options to avoid getting stranded in flooded areas.

Avinash Babur, CEO of insurancemarket.ae, emphasized the importance of essential services such as roadside assistance and comprehensive coverage against natural disasters. While some clients may believe that third-party liability coverage suffices, Babur stressed the necessity of comprehensive insurance to safeguard against unforeseen damages.

In essence, understanding the intricacies of insurance coverage is imperative for UAE motorists, especially in the face of unpredictable weather events like heavy rainfall. Being informed about policy terms and investing in comprehensive coverage can mitigate the financial risks associated with rain-related damages.
