UAE launches 6-year air taxi service with Joby Aviation ahead of US

Joby Aviation, a company based in the United States specializing in the development of all-electric aircraft for commercial passenger service, has secured a deal to operate air taxis in Dubai for a period of six years.

The firm has also received financial backing from the Dubai government, which comes ahead of the commencement of air taxi services in the emirate. This agreement, outlined in the company's financial report, grants Joby exclusive rights to operate air taxis in Dubai for the specified duration. Additionally, it encompasses financial assistance and outlines a regulatory framework to facilitate early operations.

Joby Aviation finalized an agreement with Dubai's Road and Transport Authority (RTA) in February, during the World Government Summit. This agreement sets the stage for the launch of air taxi services by early 2026, with Joby aiming for initial operations to commence as soon as 2025.

The collaboration with the RTA ensures various forms of support, including financial mechanisms, to facilitate the establishment and advancement of service operations in Dubai.

Bonny Simi, the president of Joby Aviation, highlighted in an interview with Bloomberg that Dubai will witness the debut of their air taxi before any other country, including the United States.

In a previous interview, JoeBen Bevirt, the founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, mentioned the company's exploration of opportunities to establish a manufacturing facility in the UAE and other regional countries.

Bevirt elaborated on their manufacturing capabilities, citing existing manufacturing lines in California and Ohio, which have received incentives totaling $330 million. He expressed active discussions with the region regarding potential manufacturing opportunities, with the UAE being among the countries under consideration for setting up manufacturing units.
