UAE Cyber Security Council Cautions against Possible Attacks During the Holidays

Asma Ahmed - | UAE

The UAE Government Cyber Security Council has issued a warning regarding the heightened risk of cyber attacks during holiday periods, particularly emphasizing the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebration.

They urge both individuals and institutions to exercise caution and implement preventive measures due to the increased susceptibility to cyber threats during such times. The Council emphasizes the importance of raising awareness and taking proactive steps to safeguard personal, institutional, and data security, thereby contributing to the overall protection of the national cybersecurity framework.

Emphasizing the imperative of regularly updating protection software and operating systems, conducting routine device scans, exercising caution when encountering suspicious links or attachments, employing strong and intricate passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication for account security, the Council underscores the significance of proactive cybersecurity measures.

Furthermore, the Council highlights the crucial role of disseminating cyber awareness and fostering a culture of cybersecurity within society to mitigate the risks of cyber threats. They advocate for vigilance and precision when handling emails, verifying the authenticity of unusual requests to thwart phishing attempts, and employing robust security measures such as complex passwords and two-factor authentication.

The Cybersecurity Council initiated an awareness campaign in March, targeting both governmental and private entities as well as the wider community. This campaign, titled "The National Cybersecurity Campaign: A Year of Digital Awareness and Education," aims to enhance awareness of cyber threats and promote strategies for protection against them. By cautioning against falling victim to phishing and electronic fraud attacks, the campaign underscores the importance of safeguarding personal information and data in the digital sphere.

Aligned with the directives of the UAE’s leadership, the National Cybersecurity Campaign underscores the significance of information and data security in the context of rapid digital advancements. It underscores the commitment to creating a secure digital environment for all citizens and residents while enhancing awareness of cyber threats and protective measures.

Spanning a year, the campaign comprises 52 topics, with each week focusing on a new aspect of cybersecurity. Through initiatives such as Cyber Pulse, it addresses various facets of cybersecurity, including identifying suspicious emails, staying informed about emerging threats, updating software regularly, and utilizing secure communication applications online.

Ultimately, the National Cybersecurity Campaign endeavors to cultivate a culture of cybersecurity across all sectors of society and facilitate secure digital transformation throughout the country.
