UAE: Sharjah mandates permits for selling iftar snacks outside shops

Restaurants and shops intending to operate and serve food during daylight hours throughout Ramadan in Sharjah must secure permits from the Sharjah City Municipality. The holy month is anticipated to commence on March 12, as per recent astronomical calculations, and is expected to span 30 days.

The municipality announced on Tuesday the commencement of issuing the necessary permits for food establishments. This requirement applies to food outlets situated within malls and shopping centers as well. The Sharjah Municipality has stated that permits are necessary for restaurants, cafeterias, confectioneries, and pastry shops to display food outside of their establishments prior to iftar time.

One kind of permission is required for the exhibition of food throughout the day for the purpose of preparation, while another kind is required for the display of snacks outside of restaurants just prior to iftar. Here are the specifics of the requirements for food service establishment compliance:

For food preparation and sale during the day:

  • Permit issuance fee: Dh3000.
  • Food service must occur off-site.
  • Customer seating in dining areas is prohibited.
  • Food preparation and cooking are restricted to interior kitchens.

For food displayed for sale outside shops before iftar:

  • Permit issuance fee: Dh500.
  • Food must be exhibited on the sidewalk (as long as it's not sandy).
  • Food should be placed in non-corrosive metal containers and showcased in a glass box (minimum size of 100 cm) with a sliding or hinged door.
  • Food must be covered with aluminum foil or transparent, food-grade plastic, utilizing food-grade packaging materials.
  • Food must be stored at suitable temperatures (neither chilled nor frozen).
  • Displayed food should be prepared at the establishment according to its permitted activities.
