UAE announces Al Khail Road Upgrade to Reduce Travel Time by 30% in Dubai

A substantial reduction in travel time along Dubai's Al Khail Road is on the horizon with the announcement of a new Dh700 million project on Sunday.

This Al Khail road improvement initiative aims to construct five bridges, effectively mitigating traffic congestion issues along the highway.

The road enhancement efforts will encompass various locations including Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The project's contract has already been awarded, marking a significant step forward in addressing traffic challenges in these areas.

Al Khail Road serves as a vital traffic artery in Dubai, spanning from the Business Bay crossing to its junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, boasting six lanes in each direction.

According to Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), this project will not only improve Al Khail Road but also enhance the capacity of roads that run parallel to and support other major routes like Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, and Emirates roads.

Enhancing Traffic Flow in Seven Key Locations

The RTA has outlined key enhancements planned for seven locations along Al Khail Road:

  1. Zabeel: Constructing a three-lane bridge to streamline traffic from Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Road onto Al Khail Road towards Abu Dhabi. Improvements will also be made to roads linking inbound traffic from Al Khail Road to Financial Centre Street.

  2. Meydan: Construction of a two-lane bridge to facilitate traffic from Al Meydan Road onto Al Khail Road towards Deira. Roads will also be improved to enhance traffic connectivity between Al Khail Road and Ras Al Khor Road.

  3. Al Quoz 1: Development of a two-lane bridge to connect traffic from Al Meydan Road to Al Khail Road towards Abu Dhabi. Improvements will facilitate traffic flow between Al Khail Road and Al Waha Street.

  4. Ghadeer Al Tair: Construction of a two-lane bridge to link traffic from Latifa Bint Hamdan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira. This will enhance connectivity between Al Khail Road and Al Meydan Road.

  5. Jumeirah Village Circle: Implementation of a two-lane bridge to connect traffic from Al Khail Road to Hessa Street. Upgrades will enhance traffic flow between Jumeirah Village Circle and Al Khail Road towards Deira.

  6. Al Jaddaf: Additional lane to improve traffic flow towards Deira, increasing road capacity by approximately 2,000 vehicles per hour.

  7. Business Bay: Improving traffic flow from Al Khail Road into the Business Bay area by widening the road entry and adding an additional lane.

In 2012, the RTA had previously upgraded Al Khail Road by transforming roundabouts into flyovers, demonstrating a continued commitment to enhancing Dubai's transportation infrastructure.
