The UAE Cyber Security Council recently issued a heightened warning concerning the desktop edition of Google Chrome, the world's most widely used web browser.
This advisory, released on February 22, emphasizes the importance of updating to the latest version of Chrome to mitigate the risk of potential breaches or leaks of personal information and data, as well as to prevent the execution of malicious activities.
According to the cybersecurity agency's latest security alert, multiple vulnerabilities have been identified in the Chrome browser. These vulnerabilities have the potential to enable attackers to remotely execute arbitrary code on affected systems, compromise sensitive data, or circumvent security measures.
Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems are susceptible to the vulnerabilities, which affect Google Chrome versions before v122.0.6261.57. Two high-severity defects, five medium-severity vulnerabilities, and one low-severity issue have been remedied in the most recent Chrome update, according to Google.
To ensure protection against these vulnerabilities, users are advised to promptly update their Chrome browser to the latest version. Typically, updates are installed automatically in the background when the browser is closed and reopened. However, if an update is pending, users can manually initiate the process by following these steps:
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Click on the More icon located at the top right corner.
- If an update is available, options such as "Relaunch to update," "Finish update," or "New Chrome available" will be displayed.
- Proceed to click on "Help" and then "About Google Chrome."
- Click on "Update Google Chrome."
- After the update is installed, click on "Relaunch" to restart the browser.
It is important to note that if the "Update Google Chrome" option is not visible, it indicates that the browser is already up-to-date. Upon relaunching Chrome, any previously opened tabs and windows will be restored automatically. However, Incognito windows will not reopen, giving users the option to postpone the restart by selecting "Not now." The update will be applied during the next browser restart.
